100 WC – Everyday vampire

“What are you a vampire?” Teased Andy. I knew I made a mistake, inviting him to my house. All he was going to do was touture me like usual.

The room was pitch black, like I loved it. Sunlight burned my pale skin even through windows. Andy placed his hand on the string to pull up the curtains. He grinned.

“Wait!” I screamed. The flash of ligh, as he pulled the string, made me fall, hitting my head on the table. Tears started to pour down my face as the pain started to register.

Andy squealed and ran away, leaving my by myself to squirm on the floor in pain.

BTN – Plastic bag bin

This BTN was about single use plastic bags in shops like Coles and Woolworths. Meg has been campaigning to get rid of these plastic bags for five years now, from writing to politics to setting up a petition to get rid of them for good in all of Australia.

The first fact was that plastic bags take 1000 years to decompose or breakdown and most of these plastic bags end up in the ocean. This means that these bags have been floating around in our ocean for years and will still be. Over 5 trillion pieces of plastic end up in our ocean. If that isn’t crazy enough, 80% of those pieces of trash are plastic bags.

Turtles actually think that these plastic bags are jelly fish. Floating in the water, it’s pretty understandable that these creatures would think they are actually edible, but the point is, that they end up trying to eat the plastic and end up choking and dying.

Coles and Woolworths are getting rid of their plastic bags all together, which means that customers will have to bring reusable bags to put their groceries in. This is really good to hear, because first of all, it’s less rubbish to go in the ocean, and second off all it might inspire other stores to ditch the plastic bags too.

An insight is that, if people spread the word of plastic bags, more people will try to make an effort to stop using them and buy resusable ones. Because of this, you need to try your best and tell people you know about it. It may not seem like a lot, just telling some people, but the cool thing is that they might tell other people too who will tell other people.

A question was, what is the rest of the world doing about plastic bags? Another one was, how long do experts think it might take for all plastic bags in Australia to be gone?

100 WC – Magic Show

We watched as the magician twirled his wand in his hand. He held a top hat and stared at us with a michevious grin. I rolled my eyes. What’s he going to do? Pull a rabbit out of a hat? I watched as my little sister leaned forward, her eyes wide, when all of a sudden she lept out of her seat, walked a bit, and climbed onto the stage!

“Susie!” I called. “You can’t do that!” She ran over to the magician and stuck her hand in his hat.

“Don’t do that!” The magician yelled.

BTN – Stress and bullying

Facts

Understanding

Question

This BTN was about stress and bullying at schools in Australia. It was twenty minute long video all about statistics, facts, and things you can do to help with certain topics.

16,000 kids who were in years 4 – 12 were surveyed on these topics. Many kids felt stressed. For example: 1 in 3 girls said they were unhappy and 1 in 3 boys feel constantly stressed. That’s a really big number of children stressed in school. Stress, anxiety or worry can come from all sorts of different problems: it can come from family situations. Your parents could divorce, someone could fall ill, or someone close to you could pass away. You could be stressed out with your own after school activities or responsibilities. Bullying is another big part of it as well. Being continuously bullying is very stressful. You may feel scared to go to school to see that person because you don’t want to be hurt physically or emotionally.

Bullying comes in lots of different shapes and forms of bullying. About half of the children surveyed said they were bullied. This to me is very crazy, because it means that there are lots of bullies out there. It just feels like a lot of people and means that you probably know a lot of people who have been bullied, and have bullied others. Bullying can be using your words to target someone, using your actions: this can be pushing them, hitting them, kicking them, touching them where they don’t want to be touch on purpose. Bullying can also be on social media. People can comment mean things on your social media profiles and things like that. It’s hard to understand that bullying doesn’t last forever sometimes because it’s your life, but bad bullying rarely happens out of school, if your social media is private.

A question was, what are the different punishments for bullying around the world? In some schools you can get expelled. Another question was, what do schools do to help  kids who have bad anxiety and stress?

100 WC – A carousel with no horses

The fair smelt of cotton candy and every food you could think of deep fried.  The rides looked old and broken, which is why Dina didn’t want her child anywhere near them. Dina picked up Hailey and tried to walk away from the fair. Unfortunately for her, Hailey saw something. The carousel looked haunted. All the colour was drained from it. It looked broken and destroyed, especially because there were no horses. Hailey cried and cried, staring at the awful machine which was being run by a man with more tattoos than skin on his body. A carousel with no horses? Dina held Hailey tight and walked away from the fair.

The picture isn’t really like the story, but I wanted it to be different than everyone elses, and I thought it was close enough. Maybe, if I had more room to expand, I could of had it to do with the picture. For now, you can assume this is the child’s imagination.
